Black Girl Magic Pitch Competition Featured Businesses Part IV

If you tuned into the Black Girl Magic Summit that took place last weekend, then you got to witness an amazing weekend full of inspiration, guidance, insight and lots of #blackgirlmagic! Capital One presented us with the Black Girl Magic Pitch Competition which featured 5 finalist and 3 grand prize winners.

There were many participants that entered for a chance to win the three grand prizes from Capital One, however not everyone was able to win. It takes a lot to put yourself out there in order to take your brand to the next level—and we at Boss Women Media know all about this. So, we wanted to do something special for the participants that did not win the grand prize, but still shared their businesses with us.

We’ve compiled a 4-part list which highlights all of the Black Girl Magic Pitch Competition participants. Keep reading to find out more about these amazing businesses!

Business Name: RxHair

Why you started your business? I started RxHair because I am a pharmacist by training. The hair products I’ve used in the past would all leave my hair dry a day or two after styling and with what I’ve learned from earning my doctor of pharmacy degree, I knew there were things out there that would truly lock moisture in for my hair. So I created my own products which worked much better than expected. I knew what I had was too good not to share so I bottled it up and provided them for you the RxHair family.

What does your business do? RxHair s a handmade hair and beard product brand formulated by a pharmacist and operating under the principle of Matthew 5:16. The ‘Holy Grail’ of moisture, RxHair has been studied and formulated to truly lock in moisture and help you become your own hair goals 💕

Business Name: GrillzandGranola

Why you started your business? Towards the end of 2015, I hit an emotional rock bottom. I was going through a divorce, mismanaging my panic disorder and trying to navigate my life as a twenty-something. All of these life changes caused me to spiral into a depression and in many ways self-sabotage. Rather than confronting  my poor mental health, I decided to keep myself busy by going to the gym on the weekdays and partying excessively on the weekends because I could afford to go to therapy. After a few weeks of partying, I quickly learned that alcohol only made my depression and anxiety worse. I started working out more because it made me feel better. Within 9 months, I legally set up my business GrillzandGranola, created a business plan, became a certified group fitness instructor, etc and acted on my idea. Since my professional background is in training & development, I created a project plan and course brief, and worked on it every single night after work. By June of 2016, I launched my first TrapAerobics class.

What does your business do? GrillzandGranola is a MWBE certified, NYC-based fitness company that curates and creates community-based experiences powered by women of color, starting with our signature class, TrapAerobics. We cater to the confident underdogs and women with curves that you don’t see in magazines or mainstream fitness studios.

My goal is to help those who look like me find and define their version of success with breastfeeding.

What does your business do? The mission of Hey Mama Lactation and Perinatal Care (also Hey Mama LPC) is to provide clinical lactation services, as well as postpartum support and care for parents and babies. While using current best practices as recommended by the governing bodies of lactation and postpartum care, Hey Mama LPC provides professional services, expertly and without judgement. Additionally, we work to provide support and education to women of color to reduce breastfeeding and mortality disparities through partnerships and advocacy efforts with other healthcare workers and the community at large.

Business Name: Cinched Collections

Why you started your business? Most women generally struggle finding clothing that properly fits. However, this issue disproportionately affects women of color specifically. Many black and brown women often have curvier bodies than most other ethnicities. Curvy women of color often face extreme difficulties finding clothing that properly fits their unique body type. They also rarely feel properly represented within mainstream media, especially within the fashion industry.

Cinched Collections will embrace natural, curvy, black and brown brown women while having them at the forefront of the brand! They will finally feel seen and heard within the fashion industry. I am currently conducting surveys to further gather customer insight before I begin the production process. Women of color need to feel represented and empowered, especially while coping with the traumas that this year alone has presented.

What does your business do? Cinched Collections is an e-commerce women’s apparel line that is specifically curated and designed with curvy, black and brown women in mind! It provides an underserved market with clothing specifically designed for their unique body type. The first collection will be launching April 2021, but I am currently building my audience and collecting customer surveys for feedback before production begins.
