What Does Social Distancing Look Like + How Can I Still Find Ways to Connect with Friends and Family

For many of us, the term “social distancing” may be new. It’s a term we may not be used to or even familiar with due to our lack of ever truly having to practice it. For almost two weeks now, social distancing has become a big part of majority of our lives.

It’s important that we are implementing and practicing what it means to be social distant especially at a time like this. We know how difficult it can be to have to remain in the house for long periods of time (especially for those of us that are social butterflies), however there are ways you can still interact and connect with your friends and family all while practicing social distancing.

Take a look at the list we’ve gathered to help you stay connected with your friends and family all while being mindful of what it means to be social distant.

What is Social Distancing?

For starters, social distancing refers to “certain actions that are taken by Public Health officials to stop or slow down the spread of a highly contagious disease”, or in this case, virus. Social distancing measures are put in place to limit and restrict where people are able to gather in order to stop, halt or slow down the spread of the infectious diseases.

A few social distancing measures may include, limiting a large group of people coming together in one space, closing buildings and businesses, and cancelling events. As many of us may be aware, this is currently what is taken place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many cities, states and countries across the world have begun implementing social distancing to aid in combating COVID-19.

To take part in successfully practicing social distancing, doing things such as staying home and self-quarantining, practicing good hygiene habits such as thoroughly washing your hands and covering your mouth while coughing are things that will help flatten the curve.

How can I still connect with my family and friends while practicing social distancing?

Since social distancing will be our reality for the next few weeks, many of you are still trying to find ways to connect with your family and friends. We’re blessed to be in an era of evolving technology such as the Internet and social media. These are things that are making times like this a bit easier to endure all while still being able to practice social distancing. If you begin to get that sudden urge to want to spend time with your friends and family, here are a few ideas to take into consideration:

Virtual Hangouts

Make these times fun! Think outside of the box and allow yourself to get creative with how you want to make memories with your loved ones while social-distancing. Hosting virtual hangouts on Zoom and Google Hangouts is perfect for connecting with large social groups. Even though we are socially isolated, this will still allow for a sense of community and coming together.

Social Media Lives

Both Facebook and Instagram allows its users to create live videos from their social pages. With these videos, you have the option of adding and interacting with other users as well. This is a great source to utilize in times where you are wanting to connect with friends and family. Both platforms allows your followers to comment during your live video and even send you hearts to show their appreciation for your content.

Group FaceTime calls

Group FaceTime calls are a personal favorite of mine. These calls allow you to FaceTime with a group of up to 32 people at one time! Talk about virtual family reunion! Group FaceTime calls are a great way to connect with your friends and family while practicing social distancing.

Plan a virtual movie night

Netflix Party is a new Google Chrome extension that allows its users to connect with people in different locations as they are all watching the same movie on their separate computers at the same time. This is one of the closest things many of us can get to in terms of a movie theater experience while still practicing social distancing. Netflix Party also allows its users a group chat feature where they are able to chat or talk about certain parts of the movie in real time.

Plan a virtual dinner party

Who says you can’t have dinner with your friends and family all while practicing social distancing?! Host a small dinner party by setting your computer up on your dinner table and connecting with your friends and family through a video chat. Talk to them just like you would if they were physically there at the dinner table with you. Believe it or not, this will still give you a sense of connection with your friends and family over a nice warm meal!
