Money is one of those topics many of us push to the side and decide to talk about when we’re in an emergency situation. If there’s no urgent need to discuss or focus on the conversation of money, then we’d much rather be talking about something else. But, when the goal is to heal your relationship with money and have a positive perspective on money, then facing it head on is important.
People’s relationship with money is formed early in life through a number of experiences based on the world around us. Maybe you grew up in a home where money was always talked about or maybe money was a sensitive subject that made conversations uncomfortable at the dinner table. Whatever your relationship with money may have been, now is the time to disconnect from that and heal your relationship with money.
Here are a few exercises and things you can do to help you get started towards a more abundant money mindset as your heal your relationship with money:
- View money as just a tool
Remember that you have to use money to build the life that you want. Once you understand that money is just a tool to get you to the next level, your relationship with money will begin to shift.
2. Let go of the belief that money is controlling your life
Although we need money in life to do things, don’t let the idea of money control your life. Know money’s place in your life, and use it to your advantage without allowing it to have a negative hold on you.
3. Start a gratitude journal
Most of the time when you’re worrying about money, you tend to hyperfocus on the lack of money. By starting a gratitude journal, you can shift your mindset from lack to abundance and gratefulness. The more abundant your mindset thinks and shifts, the more you’ll approach things from an abundant perspective. Practicing gratitude will also help you focus on how things are going right in your life.
4. Create positive money affirmations
Take some time to come up with some empowering money affirmations that you can say to yourself each day to help change your perspective of money. A few affirmations could include: “I am capable of making a substantial amount of money,” or “Money does not define my happiness and prosperity in life.”
5. Understand that your current money situation isn’t your forever money situation
Although you may be currently strapped for money, know that your current situation isn’t forever. A new job, a raise or promotion are just a few things that could instantly change your current money status.
Understanding and accepting that much of what feels overwhelming in life, especially with finances is such a temporary feeling and by shifting your mindset, you’re reminding yourself that negative money thoughts and relationships don’t have to last forever.
