3 Ways to Find More Time for Your Side Hustle In 2019

Ever looked at your to-do list and had no idea how you were going to get through everything? No matter what you do, your plan of crossing off everything on your list is interrupted by other pressing issues. Well for 2019 Boss Women, we are here to help you conquer your goals and get more stuff done! Here are 3 ways you can find more time for your side hustle in 2019.

1. Set Personal Office Hours

Although you might not have an actual office, setting office hours is still a great practice. This allows you to establish a routine and train your clients and customers when they contact you or when they should expect a response.  Office hours will regulate your schedule, allow you to work and prioritize more effectively. Dedicate your office hours to responding to emails, catching up on social media and really focusing on your business 100%. Don’t let anyone interrupt your office hours. This is key.  Teach your family & friends that you are “at work” and should only be interrupted if it is an emergency. Anything else can wait. This leads us directly into #2.

2. Stop Trying To Multi-task

Contrary to popular belief, multi-tasking is the worst thing you can do when it comes to trying to save time. We all want more time in our day, but what we really need is more focus.  A recent book that has caught a lot of praise is “Deep Work” by Cal Newport. According to Newport, deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It’s a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time.

Instead of trying to multitask checking emails, cooking dinner, and responding to social media comments which Newport calls shallow tasks, try to focus on one large task at a time without interruption for a set period of time.  Time blocking (which is also something to do during your office hours), will allow you a strict period of time for working and help avoid burnout. For example, try time block checking email to 2 hours a day from 9-10 a.m. and 4-5 p.m.  All emails outside of this time block can wait until your next email time period.

3. Stop By A Co-Working Space

Coworking spaces have also caught a lot of attention and gained popularity over the past few years.  Inc.com listed 23 of the most popular co-working spaces in the U.S. and the list continues to grow.  Adding on to numbers 1 & 2 of this list, stopping by a co-working space is a great way to set office hours and get into the habit of practicing deep work. Most spaces allow you to pay for a day pass, or a monthly pass.  If you really want to take it up a notch, some locations even offer dedicated office space for a monthly fee as well. Sometimes you also want to create new energy and work around other side hustlers and entrepreneurs.
